Picking a Date, Setting it Twice

Special election to officially take place in November.

NJ Gov. Chris Christie (R) "issued a writ" setting the special election and general election dates to fill the seat of the late ex-Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ) as "concurrent with the previously scheduled state primary and general election dates for 2012." State tradition has it that special elections are "rarely held" because of the costs associated (Livingston, Roll Call, 3/30). The nomination will be made during the June 5 primary election (Pizarro, PolitickerNJ.com, 3/30).
Newark City Councilman Ron Rice (D) picked up the endorsement of two of his colleagues -- Newark South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka and Central Ward Councilman Darrin Sharif. Newark City Council President Donald Payne, Jr. (D) announced last month that he would be running too. Payne, Jr. "is expected to have much of the local Democratic party establishment behind him" (Roll Call, 3/30).
Meanwhile, Union County Dem Cmte Chair Charlotte DeFilippo confirmed that Union Co. will give the contenders an open primary, calling it the "fairest for everybody" (Pizarro, PolitickerNJ, 3/30).
