Bellavia wins series of endorsements over Collins.

Monday, April 9, 2012 | 12:55 p.m.
After the Orleans Co. GOP endorsed author/Iraq vet. David Bellavia (R) on March 29, ex-Erie Co. exec. Chris Collins (R) supporters "were unfazed." They said Orleans "is Bellavia turf" because his family is from there. But then the Livingston Co. GOP, despite the Collins support expressed by Livingston Co. GOP chair Lowell Conrad, "came in for Bellavia." The Wyoming Co. GOP "followed." And Monroe Co. GOP chair Bill Reilich "made it clear he was not a Collins guy."
State Sen. George Maziarz (R), "a major figure" in Niagara Co. politics, also "strongly endorsed Bellavia." And Cillins "got no help" when the Niagara Co. GOP and Ontario Co. GOP, as well as his hometown Erie Co. GOP, "said they would endorse nobody."
Bellavia spokesperson Michael Caputo "says it shows Collins is not as popular as he thinks," — especially in the GLOW (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming) counties.
Caputo: “The GLOW counties are uniting behind David Bellavia and it’s going to turn out to be Erie standing alone."
Collins: “I’m not a favorite of the political insiders and this is political insiders working overtime to prevent me from being the next congressman. And George Maziarz is leading the pack. ... Some people collect baseball cards. David collects political endorsements” (McCarthy, Buffalo News, 4/8).
