Weddington Mayor Pro Tem Dan Barry (R) "went to Washington last spring and lined up consultants and pollsters." Last month, "Barry became one of four" GOP candidates "to sign the no-tax pledge from Americans for Tax Reform. He describes himself as 'a constitutional Republican.' He favors a balanced budget amendment, for example, 'but only if it includes both a spending limitation and a super-majority for raising taxes.'"
A Sunday school teacher, "Barry calls himself a social conservative. But he focuses on taxes and the economy." Barry: "The social issues aren't going to drive our campaign. In November people are going to be talking about jobs and the economy" (Morrill, Charlotte Observer, 4/8).
