Lewis Co. judge-executive Thomas Massie (R) "aired his first ad that uses as its narration a 2010 floor speech" by Rep. Geoff Davis (R). The spot for Massie "aired during the first half" of the UK-UL basketball game on CBS on March 31 "in the Cincinnati-television market only." It cost $7K "for the 30-second spot, Massie said." Massie: "We thought that was a bargain. This is bigger than the Super Bowl in Kentucky."
Massie "said he didn't think viewers would assume" Davis's words "constituted an endorsement of his candidacy." Massie: "That's why I was very adamant the date (of the speech) was included. The congressman made those remarks about me long before the campaign. ... Congressman Davis was recognizing me as an individual in the 4th District trying to make a difference."
The Columbus-based Strategy Group for Media "produced the ad." Massie "said his campaign already has produced a next ad but said the campaign won't necessarily be up on the air solidly" until the May 22 primary election (Alessi, "Pure Politics", CN|2, 3/31).
Davis "did not take kindly" to Massie's camp "using the congressman's floor speech as its narration and wants the ad spiked, according to the congressman's wife." Pat Davis "tweeted that her husband 'DID NOT' give permission to the Massie campaign to use his words." Pat Davis: "(Geoff) is not endorsing Massey (sic) nor will he." Her tweet "went on to say that her husband 'demanded the ad be pulled."
Booke Co. Judge-executive Gary Moore's (R) mgr "said Massie's commercial 'shows poor judgement (sic) on Massie's behalf and seems opportunistic and desperate'" (Alessi, "Pure Politics", CN|2, 4/1).
Just To Make Sure Every Red Flag Goes Up
Massie "spoke at an event" on March 30 at the "home of" supporter Richard Knock, "who has been linked" to a potential super PAC that could "get involved in the race." Massie: "I gave a speech. There was a lawyer there and I read the appropriate disclaimer" (Alessi, "Pure Politics", CN|2, 4/1).
