Dewhurst Raises $1.66 Million

Dewhurst Raises $1.66 Million:
Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst raised $1.66 million during the first quarter of the year, his campaign told Hotline on Call on Wednesday. Dewhurst's impressive haul should increase his already considerable financial advantage in the race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

The total does not include any personal contributions from Dewhurst, who has previously poured $2 million of his own money into his campaign. The campaign said it has not tallied its cash on hand sum.

Dewhurst's third straight impressive fundraising quarter shines the spotlight on former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and, especially, former state Solicitor Gen. Ted Cruz, neither of whom have released their first quarter numbers yet. Unlike Dewhurst and Leppert, Cruz does not have the ability to partially self-fund his bid.

Dewhurst is the frontrunner to capture the GOP nomination.

Armey: Dewhurst benefits from 'daddy's money'

Armey: Dewhurst benefits from 'daddy's money':
The Senate campaign of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is asking for an apology from FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey for suggesting his success is due to his father's money.
Armey compared Dewhurst to the Freedomworks-backed Ted Cruz in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News:

“If you talk about all the conventional political endowments, Dewhurst has them,” Armey said.  “Cruz has none.  But that doesn’t bother our folks.  Their belief is hard work beats daddy’s money.

The Dewhurst campaign charged that inserting Dewhurst's deceased father into the political debate was unseemly.
"Ted Cruz and his ally Dick Armey should be ashamed of themselves.  Armey's attack on David Dewhurst and his long-deceased father marks a new low in the Cruz-Armey pattern of shameful and false attacks.  Ted Cruz should repudiate Dick Armey's blatantly dishonest statement and apologize to the Dewhurst family," said Dewhurst adviser Jim Bognet.
The statement goes on to note that Dewhurst's father died when he was just three years old, forcing both David into the workforce through high school.
"The courage of David's father, who led attacks on D-Day, inspired him to answer the call to service. David would later became an officer in the United States Air Force.  Afterward, David built Falcon Seaboard from scratch and grew it into a successful energy and investments company. David is a self-made man who has lived the American dream and is fighting to make sure everyone can chase their own American dream," continues the statement.
The Express-News notes it hasn't seen any evidence to suggest Dewhurst's wealth is a result of inheritance. "On the contrary, the public information indicates he made his fortune in the energy industry, after a career in the CIA," it reports.
Cruz is increasingly seen as the biggest threat to Dewhurst's grip on the GOP nomination ahead of the May 29 primary.

Dewhurst Camp Slams Cruz for Refusing to Back Cornyn for GOP Whip

Dewhurst Camp Slams Cruz for Refusing to Back Cornyn for GOP Whip:
When Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., announced last week that he wouldn't run for whip next year, it gave Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a clearer -- and potentially unopposed -- path to the No. 2 leadership post in the Senate's GOP hierarchy. But one Republican in Cornyn's home state Senate race hasn't committed to voting for his fellow Texan next year.

While all the other major candidates in the GOP field have pledged to support Cornyn's bid if elected, former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz remains neutral.

Cruz told a Lubbock radio station in February that it would be "presumptuous" for him to endorse a candidate for a leadership position before actually winning the election.

"I'm not committing to any leadership votes because I'm focusing on winning a primary," Cruz said.

But in November, Cruz endorsed Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson's campaign against Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., for GOP conference vice-chair.

Cruz's campaign did not respond to Hotline on Call's questions about why Cruz isn't backing Cornyn, but Dave Carney, an adviser to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, charged Cruz with hypocrisy. He suggested Cruz supported Johnson to please conservative groups, like the Club for Growth, that have backed his bid.

"He can't have it both ways," Carney said. "He got caught showing what his real values are. They don't lie with Texans. They lie with the D.C. special interests that are supporting his campaign."
