Republican businessman Eric Hovde is hitting the TV airwaves in Wisconsin for the first time with an ad casting the nation's fiscal woes as more than just a financial problem.
"We have more debt to our economy than all but three European countries. This is not just an economic crisis; it's a moral crisis," Hovde says in the ad. "The path the politicians gave us is destroying our children's future."
Hovde's campaign didn't immediately disclose the size of the buy, only saying that it's part of a "major statewide TV ad buy."
Former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson is the only other candidate who has been up on TV. On Thursday, the campaigns of Thompson and Hovde got into a back-and-forth over Thompson's expected absence from an upcoming debate.
Hovde's entrance into the race last month was met with mixed results. He railed against TARP but records show his company invested in banks that received money from the controversial program. Opponents also bashed Hovde for living in D.C. for over two decades.
But his profile is appealing. In a Republican race in which the two frontrunners are a former member of Congress and a former four-term governor, an outsider from the private sector with the ability to self-fund has the potential to stand out.
On Message Inc. produced Hovde's ad. That's the same firm that helped propel political outsider Ron Johnson to victory in 2010's Senate race. Johnson is staying neutral in the 2012 Republican primary.
